Lesson Seven: Religious Studies
A black curtain rimmed in gold light stood facing the students. There was no wind, they were indoors in the tiniest room of the Academy and yet the curtain fluttered excitedly before them. The students longed to know what was behind it and at the same time, were frightened by the very prospect. A buzzing sound, like a thousand whispers could be heard behind the mysterious curtain and the more the students looked at the blackness, the more pitiless it seemed.
The unknown. That was what this curtain resembled.
Mrs Colby appeared behind them, like smoke rising from a flame. She, uncharacteristically, smiled at them all as she floated to the front of the class and tantalizingly close to the black curtain.
"Well, girls, good morning. Today is your religious studies lesson, an impossible lesson to teach. There are over eight billion known religions in the history of our universe alone. It would be impossible for me to teach you all of them and more so for you to truly understand even half a dozen of them. But there is one cast-iron factor which every religion follows and it is a concept which I hope you will learn today."
Mrs Colby pressed her index finger to the golden light around the edge of the curtain. It immediately ebbed away or perhaps was finally absorbed into the darkness that the curtain seemed to contain; it was hard to say from watching.
Then, with just utter blackness now engulfing the ever so mysterious curtain, it stopped fluttering. In fact, it seemed to cease even being there as all of a sudden the curtain was no more: instead the students were looking into a vortex. Great was the surprise, even greater was the horror. The vortex was endless. Just looking down into it filled the students with a fear they had never known before because they knew what was coming. Mrs Colby intended them to learn the importance of faith. It was time for the students to leap into the unknown, in all literal senses.
Explained in mortal tongue...
The students will be jumping into a vortex! They must put all their faith into the endless depths of this vortex, without any knowledge of what will happen to them or when (if) they will make it out of there...
